History

Established in the Year 1835
  • The first chair of Medical Jurisprudence in India was established at Madras Medical College, Madras in 1835.
  • The Department of Forensic Medicine, Madras Medical College, Chennai was upgraded in the year 1987 and renamed as Institute of Forensic Medicine, Madras Medical College, Chennai. The Institute of Forensic Medicine carries out the Academic activities for undergraduate & postgraduate students.
  • This institute carries out medico legal activities of major parts of Chennai and also from other districts. Cases of medico legal nature are referred from Madras High Court and other Sessions and Magistrate Courts.
  • The Director of Forensic Medicine is also the State Police Surgeon who offers expert opinion in the cases referred by CBI, CBCID and other investigation agencies routed through Director of Medical Education.
  • Significant Events
  • India’s first post mortem examination was conducted in Madras Medical College in 1693 by Dr. Edward Bulkley on Mr. James Wheeler who was suspected as to be killed by arsenic poisoning. After post mortem examination, Wheeler was found to be died of natural cause.
  • Post mortem examination of the honorable late prime minister RAJIV GANDHI was conducted in our institute by our former Director & Professor Dr Amrit Patnaik, M.D., in 1991.

Dr. P. Parasakthi is a highly experienced academician and medical professional in Forensic Medicine. Currently, she serves as Director and Professor at Madras Medical College, Chennai. With over 30 years of teaching experience, she has worked across several reputed medical colleges in Tamil Nadu. Her career includes roles as Tutor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor in Forensic Medicine. She has been associated with institutions like Chengalpattu, Coimbatore, Thiruvarur, and Madras Medical Colleges. Dr. Parasakthi has also undertaken certified training in Medical Education Technology and Biomedical Research. She has been serving Madras Medical College as Director and Professor since 2017. Dr. A. Nagendra Kumar is an accomplished academic in the field of Forensic Medicine. He completed his MBBS from KAPV Govt. Medical College, Trichy in 2007. He obtained his MD in Forensic Medicine from Madras Medical College in 2014. Currently, he is serving as an Associate Professor at Madras Medical College. He began his teaching career as a Tutor in Forensic Medicine at Madras Medical College in 2011. Later, he worked as Assistant Professor at Chengalpattu and Vellore Government Medical Colleges. He was promoted as Associate Professor at Chengalpattu Medical College in 2021. In February 2023, he joined Madras Medical College in the same capacity. He has undergone training in Medical Education Technology and Biomedical Research. With over a decade of teaching experience, he continues to contribute actively to academics and student mentoring.
