Department Of Geriatric Medicine, Madras Medical College
  • The Department of Geriatric Medicine at Madras Medical College caters exclusively to the older people who are above 60 years of age. The Department Of Geriatric Medicine was established in April 1978, by Padmashree Dr.V.S.Natarajan MD,FRCP, former Professor & HOD, with the aim of providing comprehensive health care to Senior Citizens. Geriatric Medicine Department in Madras Medical College is the first of its kind in India.
  • Outpatient Services started in 1978, catered to the medical, physical, mental and social problems of the older people. In the year 1988, 20 bedded Geriatric ward was started for acute care & Rehabilitation.
  • After establishing the OP and IP services, the approval for the post graduate degree course, M.D., Geriatric Medicine was obtained in the year 1996 with 2 seats per year. The Madras Medical College is the first institution in India to start the M.D. Geriatrics course. The PG seats were increased from 2 to 3 seats per year in 2010.
  • In 2012, 8 bedded Geriatric ICU was established in MMC / Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital to take care of the acutely sick elderly who need intensive care. At present, the total bed strength of Geriatric Medicine department is 88 with 45 in male ward, 35 in female ward and 8 beds in Geriatric ICU. The Department has been upgraded as a Regional Geriatric Centre under National Programme fo the Health Care of the Elderly by Govt of India. In February 2013, the first Regional Geriatric Centre in India was established at Madras Medical College. The PG seats were increased from 3 to 9 seats per year in 2020.
  • The National Centre of Ageing (NCA), Chennai, funded by the Government of India has been developed in the premises of King Institute of Preventive Medicine campus, Guindy, under the aegis of Madras Medical College, Chennai. It is a comprehensive Geriatric care centre catering exclusively to the health care of the elderly. It is a unique centre and first of its kind in India

Deepa is a leading expert in Geriatric Medicine, currently serving as the Director of the National Centre for Ageing, Guindy. With extensive experience in clinical geriatrics and healthcare administration, she plays a pivotal role in shaping elderly care services at both institutional and national levels. As a member of the Technical Advisory Group for the National Programme for the Health Care of the Elderly (NPHCE), Dr. Deepa contributes significantly to policy development, program implementation, and advancing geriatric care models across India.

Dr.K.Umakalyani, did under graduation at Thanjavur Medical college. Did Diploma inDiabetology and Masters in Geriatric Medicine in Madras Medical college. Co-authored chapters in IAG textbook of Geriatric Medicine, and WHO training module of Geriatric care.Contributed to course material for PG diploma in Geriatric Medicine by IGNOU. Regularly presenting topics inNational IAG conferences.Have nearly 15 years experience in Geriatric medicine. PresentlySecretary for Chennai chapter of IAG and Joint secretary of Indian Academy of Geriatrics. Areas of Interest are Frailty, Multimorbidity and Palliative Care.

Dr. Senthil is an experienced Geriatrician with over 16 years of dedicated service in elderly care. He completed his MBBS from Stanley Medical College and his postgraduate training in Geriatric Medicine from Madras Medical College. Currently working at the National Centre for Ageing, Guindy, he specializes in managing chronic diseases, dementia, falls, and frailty in older adults. He is also actively involved in teaching and promoting holistic, person-centred geriatric care

She completed her undergraduate training at Sri Ramachandra Medical College and pursued DTCD and MD in Geriatrics at Madras Medical College. Dr. Sumathi has previously served as the Deputy Director of Tuberculosis and is currently working as a Senior Assistant Professor at the National Institute of Ageing, Guindy.

Facility & Clinical Care

  • The OP services are being provided in the OP block, Tower III, 6th floor at room no 31. A separate male and female OPD are available. The timing is from 8.00AM – 11.00 AM. Patients above 60years are referred to Geriatric Medicine OPD from various departments.
  • Inpatient wards are situated in the 4th floor of Tower block I &II.
    • Ward 241 - Geriatric Medicine male ward
    • Ward 143 - Geriatric Medicine female ward
  • Geriatric intensive care unit – 8 beds – in the premises of Ward 241
  • Rehabilitation services at OP and IP

  • The Department conducts specialty clinics (Monday to Saturday) between 10.00 - 11.00 AM.
