HOSPITAL INFECTION CONTROL COMMITTEE (HICC) –MMC & RGGGH

The main goal of the hospital Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) programme is to prevent or minimize the potential for healthcare associated infections to patients as well as to staff.

  • In RGGGH, HICC is headed by the Dean as Chairperson
  • Member Secretaries are Professor of Microbiology & Professor of Internal Medicine.
  • It includes representatives from different hospital clinical departments, CSSD, Pharmacy and Dietician.
  • The HICC is responsible for the planning, implementation, prioritisation, and resource allocation of all matters relating to IPC.

Infection Prevention and Control Manual has been drafted based on the current evidence and built on existing National and International guidelines. This manual on Infection prevention and control (IPC) includes appropriate IPC practices to be followed in the hospital.

HICC ACTIVITIES:

HICC meetings are held every month and minutes communicated to all the departments.

As per Action plan IPC activities are carried out in both OP and IP settings.

Pharmaco Vigilance

  • Pharmacovigilance is one of the important post-marketing tools for ensuring the safety of pharmaceutical and related health products. India started participating in the WHO Pharmacovigilance programme many years ago, and several professionals have organized numerous pharmacovigilance workshops on adverse drug reaction monitoring across the country.
  • The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, launched the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI) in July 2010 with the AIIMS, New Delhi as National Coordination center (NCC) for monitoring ADRs in the country.
  • The NCC was later shifted from AIIMS, New Delhi to Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), Ghaziabad on 15th April 2011. NCC-PvPI started with 22 ADR Monitoring Centers (AMCs) in the initial phase and currently has 1050 centers across the country. Madras Medical College, Chennai became one of the AMCs in November 2010.
  • In August 2021, Madras Medical College, Chennai was recognized as a Regional Training Centre (RTC) under PvPI for the Tamil Nadu region. As a Regional Training Centre for Tamil Nadu region, MMC has been organizing one Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme and one “Advanced Level training (ALT) in Pharmacovigilance” every year since 2021.   • Pharmacovigilance committee meeting is held twice or thrice every year and important decisions are made for the improvement of voluntary reporting by medical professionals.

  • MMC celebrates National Pharmacovigilance Week (NPW) (September 17 – 23) every year since 2021 at the Institute of Pharmacology. In the recent 5th NPW celebrations, from SEP 17th TO 21st, 2025, various activities were conducted for NPW celebrations involving II MBBS students, BDS, M Pharm, B.Sc Nursing, Other Allied health sciences students and even the common public.

  • The 5th National Pharmacovigilance Week Celebration was inaugurated by Dr. K. M. Sudha, Coordinator – PvPI. As part of the inaugural ceremony, a Pledge on Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) reporting was given by the students and faculty, emphasizing their role in promoting patient safety and strengthening pharmacovigilance activities.
  • Organised Rangoli and poster competitions based on the 5th National Pharmacovigilance week” theme to Allied Health Sciences students, Essay writing competition for MD Pharmacology students, M.Pharm students and Quiz competition for II year MBBS students and distributed the prizes for the winners in all above said competitions.
  • An awareness programme on “ADR reporting” under Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI) with emphasis on PvPI toll free number & QR code to the patients/general public by distributing pamphlets in Tamil language at Primary Health Centre, Padiyanallur, Thiruvallur.
  • Pharmacovigilance in Geriatrics
  • Pharmacovigilance-PvPI Perspectives were conducted.
  • Guest lecture on “Pharmacovigilance in Geriatrics” held on 20th Sep 2025 organised at Institute of Pharmacology, Madras Medical College, Chennai (Speaker:Dr.C.Ramachandra Bhat)
  • As Guest speaker on “Pharmacovigilance-PvPI perspective” in the webinar held on 28th Sep 2025 organised by Indian Pharmacy Graduates association (IPGA), South zone Women forum on the occasion of Pharmacovigilance week and word Pharmacist Day celebrations (Speaker: Mrs.Siddiraju Devipriya) (Virtual).
  • This centre has reported around 16000+ ADRs to NCC-PvPI from the time of its inception to October 2025. This achievement is due to the awareness among the clinicians of this institution about the importance of ADR reporting.
