- Pharmacovigilance is one of the important post-marketing tools for ensuring the safety of pharmaceutical and related health products. India started participating in the WHO Pharmacovigilance programme many years ago, and several professionals have organized numerous pharmacovigilance workshops on adverse drug reaction monitoring across the country.
- The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, launched the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI) in July 2010 with the AIIMS, New Delhi as National Coordination center (NCC) for monitoring ADRs in the country.
- The NCC was later shifted from AIIMS, New Delhi to Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), Ghaziabad on 15th April 2011. NCC-PvPI started with 22 ADR Monitoring Centers (AMCs) in the initial phase and currently has 1050 centers across the country. Madras Medical College, Chennai became one of the AMCs in November 2010.
- In August 2021, Madras Medical College, Chennai was recognized as a Regional Training Centre (RTC) under PvPI for the Tamil Nadu region. As a Regional Training Centre for Tamil Nadu region, MMC has been organizing one Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme and one “Advanced Level training (ALT) in Pharmacovigilance” every year since 2021.
