Madras Medical College was established in the year 1835 to support the medical education in connection with the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

All the departments were part of Madras Medical College since 1835. They were later upgraded into Institutes with MCI recognition for the training of postgraduates in their respective departments in the mentioned years. The Institute of Community Medicine was established in 1995. Previously, in 1895 it was known as the Hygiene Department and in 1956, it was known as the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine.
The Institute combines deep historical roots with modern infrastructure. The red fort building (dissection hall since 1835) has been converted into a historical museum by the Tamil Nadu Heritage Association.

IPEM is active in both teaching and research in areas including electrophysiological testing, stress physiology and medical instrumentation. It is equipped with advanced facilities such as biochemical and haematological testing setups, physiological data acquisition systems, recording of ECG, etc.
The Institute of Biochemistry is active in varied academic and research activities — faculty members participate in organizing seminars and workshops in molecular biochemistry, biomedical sciences, conducting events like the UGC-sponsored workshop on biochemical techniques held in March 2017.

A pioneer in using immunohistochemistry for diagnostics in 1983, and since then, it has delivered comprehensive teaching, diagnostic, and research services in immunopathology and molecular pathology.

The Institute of Pharmacology plays a pivotal role in both undergraduate and postgraduate education, emphasizing experimental pharmacology, toxicology, and pharmacovigilance, supported by practical training, software-assisted labs, and drug-monitoring facilities.
The Institute has conducted extensive research on topics including diarrheal diseases, microbial toxins, viral infections and has functioned as an ICMR Regional Referral Centre for microbial testing. It also holds the DHR funded Virology disease Research laboratory (VDRL) which is active in extensive microbiological research.

This Institute trains future physicians in critical medico-legal disciplines—including forensic pathology, toxicology, medical jurisprudence, and ethical practice—and delivers practical exposure through autopsy procedures and court-related documentations.
