Established in the Year: DEPARTMENT OF PLASTIC SURGERY ON 1963.

• Prof Chakkri Balakrishnan after getting trained under the guidance of Sir Harold Gilles Who is father of modern plastic surgery, started the plastic surgical unit in Govt Nagpur medical college, then plastic surgery course on 15 th Dec 1960.
• One of the four trainees of first batch was Dr C R Sundararajan. After acquiring degree M Ch he came to Chennai and started 1st ever department of plastic surgery for whole of South India, in this govt hospital ON 1966.
• 1ST Batch students were Dr Nayak and Dr Mathangi Ramakrishnan. Dr Mathangi Ramakrishnan is the person who established Burns unit at KMC, which grown up as a main tertiary unit for treating burns patients.
• In 1972, after getting his Asst professor Dr. Nirmala Subramaniyam, who had microsurgical training, started doing microsurgeries in the 1972.
• 1ST Successful index finger replantation was done on 1974. Subsequently the number of PG seats increased from 1 per year to 3 per year. Now, from 2010 onwards the number of seats increased to 8 per year. So far about 204 residents were trained by the department, and spread all over the India and abroad to excel their extraordinary service in this Speciality. The department also trained 54 DNB graduates.
