Government institute of rehabilitation
    Pioneering Outpatient Care and Training Hub
  • Government institute of rehabilitation medicine is a comprehensive rehabilitation center for differently abled person. It is one of the premier rehabilitation center in our country rendering medical, social and vocational rehabilitation to persons with locomotor disabilities.
  • In 1959 department of physiotherapy was started. In 1960 medical rehabilitation unit was started. In 1963 artificial limb center was formed. All these were attached to Government general hospital, Madras.
  • In 1972 school of prosthetics and orthotics was started
  • In 1979 entire setup was shifted to present venue in KK Nagar. On 28.01.2023 institute was upgraded to Centre of excellence for rehabilitation.
  • Institute is headed by Director and assisted by team of specialists in physical medicine, physiotherapy, prosthetics and orthotics technician, social worker, psychologist and vocational counselor.
  • It is 110 bedded-hospital with 3 wards consisting of male, female and amputee wards.

Dr. P.Thirunavukkarasu

PROFESSOR AND HOD

DR. P.Thirunavukkarasu received his MBBS degree from Madras Medical College from Madras University and obtained Post graduate degree – Diplomate in National Board (DNB) in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation from National Board of Examinations, New Delhi in November 2000. He worked in various faculty positions in PMR Dept in many Govt Medical Colleges in Tamilnadu, has more than 25 years of teaching experience and holding the post of Professor since 2014. He has immense interest in research particularly in Neuro rehabilitation and Musculoskeletal rehabilitation and published articles in many reputed journals. He is presently holding the post of Director and Professor, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Government Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, Madras Medical College, Chennai a Centre of Excellence for Rehabilitation in Chennai.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

Dr K Premalatha has been graduated from Stanley medical college affiliated to Madras University in 1989 and finished diploma Post graduation in Physical medicine and Rehabilitation from Madras medical college in 2013. She worked as senior resident in Villupuram medical college and stanley medical college and joined GIRM, Madras medical college in 2016

Dr. K. Chitrarasu was graduated from Government Kilpauk Medical college. He finished his MD in physical medicine and rehabilitation from Madras Medical college. He started working as Assistant Professor in PMR department since 2017.

RM.Kamakshi did her MBBS degree from IRT Perundurai Medical College affiliated to DR.MGR medical university. MD degree from MMC ,CHENNAI in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and degree issued from DR MGR medical university in May 2019. Serving in PMR department as teaching faculty for 5 yrs in Govt Stanley and Madras Medical College in Tamilnadu and holding the post of assistant Professor since 2022. She has immense interest in research particularly in Neuro rehabilitation ,Amputee and Musculoskeletal rehabilitation and published articles in reputed journals. She is presently holding the post of senior assistant professor ,Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Government Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, Madras Medical College, Chennai a Centre of Excellence for Rehabilitation in Chennai

Guests Lectures

A guest lecture was organized for the postgraduate students of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR), Government Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine (GIRM), Chennai. The session was delivered by an Dr. Feroz khan, expert in the field, focusing on recent advances and practical insights relevant to PMR practice. The lecture provided an opportunity for the postgraduates to update their knowledge, clarify concepts, and interact with the speaker regarding clinical applications in rehabilitation medicine.

Success Stories

Success story 1
  • Medical rehabilitation was first organised in Madras in 1960. Later independent department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation started with Prof. I S Shanmugam and Prof. K. Janardhanan. Then the department was shifted to Government Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, K. K., Nagar campus.
  • Medical postgraduate courses namely Diploma in Physical Medicine (3-year course) was started with affiliation to Madras University with an intake of two Medical graduates in the year1975. Diploma seats increased to four seats. Later 3-year course of DPMR was converted to 2 years which is affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University.
  • In the year of 2014 two MD seats of PMR were sanctioned by Medical Council of India. It was only possible due to the kind co-operation of the Tamil Nadu Health Minister, Health secretary, Director of Medical Education, Dean and the Senior Professors of PMR.
  • In the year of 2019 all the 3 DPMR seats were converted to MD PMR. At present totally there are 5 MD seats in PMR in Madras Medical College.

  • A new artificial limb centre was started in 1963
  • A new artificial foot known as Madras foot was developed to facilitate bare foot walking which was the fore runner of Jaipur foot.
  • To control hyperextension of knee Madras knee Cage was designed.
  • At present Under CMCHIS scheme we are issuing sophisticated limb suitable for unlimited community ambulation for sports activities. From January 23 we are issuing following endoskeletal prosthesis

Successful rehabilitation of Parkinson disease

History

  • 54-year-old male with a 4-year history of Parkinson’s disease, previously managed medically, was admitted to GIRM with significant functional decline
  • He was fully dependent on his caregiver and presented with tremors, rigidity, gait disturbances, and cognitive dysfunction.
  • On admission - festinant gait patient was walking with walker and attender  support, short step length 

Rehab Program

  • A comprehensive rehabilitation program was initiated, including
  • Relaxation exercises using immersive virtual reality
  • Music therapy
  • Strengthening and stretching exercises
  • Balance and transfer training
  • Gait training with visual cueing
  • App-based cognitive therapy 

Outcome of Rehab Program

  • Patient is able to do bed mobility and transfer without support
  • Able to transfer in and out of chair
  • Able to stand without support
  • Maximum independence for eating achieved
  • Able to walk few steps independently
  • His MDS-UPDRS score improved from 149/272 at admission to 115/272 at discharge.
