History is no longer just a chronicle of kings and statesman, of people who wielded power, but of ordinary women and men engaged in manifold tasks.
Madras Medical College is one of the premier Institute and one of the oldest medical college in the country.
The Department of Bacteriology was initially integrated with the Department of Pathology during its inception, in this 190 year old Institution.
In the year 1971, the Department of Microbiology started functioning as a separate Department, and later on got upgraded as the Institute of Microbiology proving its excellence in various domains.
Many eminent Microbiologists like Ronald Ross and Donovan have contributed to Microbiology through their significant discovery and valuable research done in this prestigious Institute.
In 1898, Ronald Ross worked out the mosquito cycle with the parasite of Bird Malaria, and was awarded the Nobel Prize for the discovery of malarial parasite, as his early works were done in this laboratory.
In July 1903, Charles Donovan, after whom the amastigote forms of Leishmania donovani got named as the “LD bodies”, first reported them from cases of Kala-azar from this Institute, out of his valuable research done in this prestigious Institute.
1919 - Bannerman Gold Medal Prize in Microbiology for Undergraduates was constituted
1952 - Central Venereal Disease Research Laboratory was established for performing the diagnostic tests for Syphilis & other STI infections
1971 - Department got upgraded as the Institute of Microbiology
1974 - Upgraded as the Regional Laboratory for Syphilis & other STI infections
1986 - Professor Dr. Suniti Solomon pioneered AIDS research & was the first to report and confirm Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)in high risk groups. Her Postgraduate student, Dr.S.Nirmala, collected blood samples for her dissertation, which were the first samples tested positive for HIV and the first HIV documentation in India.
1988 - a laboratory was set up in this Institute for HIV testing
1996 - the Faculty of Microbiology played a key role in performing cross matching the first Cadaveric Renal Transplantation
1995 - Leptospirosis Research Cell was commissioned with technical assistance from the Royal Tropical Institute, Amsterdam, Netherlands
1998 - first Voluntary Counselling & Testing Centre (VCTC) for HIV testing started and an AIDS Research Group in Chennai was set up.
2000 - State level lab was upgraded to the National Reference Laboratory for HIV testing
2005 - Designated as Regional Training Centre for Infection Control & Waste Management (ICWM)
2006 - VCTC upgraded as the Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre (ICTC)
2009 - Regional Lab for STI renamed as Regional STI Training, Research & Reference Laboratory (RSTRRL)
June 2009 - the Faculty of Microbiology played an active role in Cadaveric Renal Transplantation Team by supporting Cadaver Cross Matching round the clock
2010 - as a step towards preparedness for H1N1 Influenza virus Pandemic, State Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory was set up
2011 - first Government Medical College in the Tamil Nadu State to get certified as NABL Accredited Laboratory for HIV Serology and CD4 Testing
2015 - “Appreciation of the Excellent Support provided for the Implementation of the Project Activities” under BioMedical Waste Management Programme for the period 2005 – 2015, was awarded by the Tamilnadu Health System Project
2019 - State Sentinel Site under National Viral Hepatitis Surveillance Program (NVHSP)
March 2020 - Viral Research & Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) was started, with funding from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR )
2020 to 2022 -VRDL was in the forefront in the fight against the COVID -19 pandemic 2020 to 2022, by testing more than six lakh samples for SARS -CoV2 during the Pandemic
2021 - Release function of Special Cover & Cancellation Commemorating 50years of Institute Day celebration
2022 - designated as the State Laboratory for National Viral Hepatitis Control Programme (NVHCP) which aims to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3.3
June 2023 - Viral Research & Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) was Certified NABL Accreditation as per ISO15189:2012
April 2024 - designated as State Surveillance Centre and Nodal Center for AMR Surveillance and Containment activities, under National Centre for Disease Control, Delhi
