History

College of Pharmacy, Madras Medical College

Pioneering Pharmaceutical Education Since 1860
College of Pharmacy

The College of Pharmacy, Madras Medical College, stands as a beacon of excellence and innovation in pharmaceutical education in India. With a legacy that dates back over 160 years, this institution has been at the forefront of shaping pharmacy education, research, and practice in the country.

Madras Medical College (MMC), one of India’s premier medical institutions, is credited with pioneering formal pharmacy education long before it was widely recognized as a distinct academic discipline.

  • 1860: Pharmacy education began at Madras Medical College with the introduction of Materia Medica classes for students of Medicine and Apothecary, laying the foundation for structured pharmaceutical training.
  • 1870: A Certificate Course for Chemists and Druggists was introduced, modeled on the curriculum of the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain. The course duration was initially 1 year.
  • 1886: The course duration was extended to 2 years, strengthening the academic and practical training components.
  • 1938: Recognizing the need for formal higher education in pharmacy, the University of Madras instituted a 2-year B.Sc. (Pharmacy) degree—a visionary move at the time.
  • 3rd July 1939: The first batch of students commenced the B.Sc. (Pharmacy) course at Madras Medical College.
  • 1946: A dedicated Department of Pharmaceutics was sanctioned, marking the diversification and specialization within the field of pharmaceutical sciences.
  • 1950: The Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) course was introduced as a 3-year program, replacing the B.Sc. model to meet evolving academic standards.
  • 1961: The B.Pharm curriculum was restructured into an integrated 4-year program, aligning with national and international norms for pharmacy education.
  • 1995: Postgraduate education was introduced with the launch of the M.Pharm program in four specializations, expanding the college’s role in advanced research and academic excellence.
  • 2008: A major milestone was achieved with the establishment of the College of Pharmacy as a separate entity under Madras Medical College, complete with the creation of the Principal’s post.
