The Madras Medical school was established in 1835 and later in 1850 became Madras Medical College. The historic seminar hall complex was built during this time. At that time, the complex housed the Dean’s office, administrative block, common hall for several departments.

Scientific and ethical committees are regularly conducted in this hall. It is also the place where monthly clinical society meetings are conducted which brings out the newer talents of young doctors.

Location:

The outpatient services of MTM Clinic function at the ground floor, Tower-3, RGGGH.

Screening:

  • All patients are screened for Hypertension and Diabetes as per the standard protocol for screening by the National Health Mission (NHM).
  • Patients with high-risk behavior are screened for Oral Carcinoma as per the guidelines.
  • Female patients aged more than 35 years and at high risk are screened for Cervical Cancer using Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA), after obtaining consent, as per guidelines.
  • Female patients aged more than 30 years and at high risk are screened for Breast Cancer using Clinical Breast Examination (CBE) as per guidelines.

Referral Services:

  • Patients with Hypertension and Diabetes are referred to speciality clinics at RGGGH after being prescribed medication for one week.
  • Patients screened positive for Oral Carcinoma are referred to the Dental College, RGGGH.
  • Patients with VIA positive results are referred to IOG, Egmore or KGH, Triplicane (attached to RGGGH) for confirmation and further management.
  • Patients with CBE positive findings are referred to the Department of Surgery, RGGGH for USG, mammography, and further management.

Follow-Up Services:

  • Patients diagnosed with Hypertension or Diabetes and without complications are advised to follow up at the nearest PHCs under the Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam scheme.
  • Patients screened positive for Cervical, Breast, or Oral Cancer are followed up via phone and their treatment progress is documented.

9 ADR Monitoring centre

ADR Monitoring Centre (AMC)- Institute of Pharmacology Madras Medical College

Pharmacovigilance center, the ADR Monitoring Center (AMC) at Institute of Pharmacology, Madras Medical College, Chennai was started in November, 2010 under Pharmacovigilance Program of India (PvPI) with an aim to ensure patient safety by detecting, monitoring and preventing the Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) & also to promote rational use of medicines.

ADR monitoring centre collects the ADR reports from different departments regularly and submits them online through VIGIFLOW (online safety data management system) to the National Coordination Centre (NCC), Pharmacovigilance Programme of India, Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission(IPC) after the causality assessment of each ADR report. An average of 70-80 ADR reports per month will be submitted to the NCC. Regular training programs on Pharmacovigilance are being organized for Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists, MBBS students, M.Pharm & B.Pharm students, BDS students and B.Sc. Nusring students and patients.

In August 2021, our AMC has been upgraded as Regional Training Centre (RTC) under PvPI for Tamil Nadu region. Since then, one Advanced level Training (ALT) & one CME in Pharmacovigilance is being organized every year for other ADR monitoring centers under PvPI in Tamil Nadu region. We are also actively involved in enrollment of other medical institutions as new AMCs under PvPI (GMC-Thiruvallur, GMC- Kallakurichi, GMC-Krishnagiri, Vels Medical College & Hospital, GMC-Omandurar. We conduct sensitization programs during the “National Pharmacovigilance Week” celebrations from 17th to 23rd September every year since 2021.

Autonomic Nervous System Labarotary was started at the Institute of Neurology, Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital at a cost of Rs. 1.30 crore under the CSR initiative with funding from M/S Infosysis . This Lab was inaugurated on the 11th of August 2023 by Our Honourable Minister for Health and Family Welfare. This Lab is the first of its kind which has been instituted in the Government Institution in Our State.

Benefits of this Lab:

This lab contains equipments which will measure the following parameters.

  • Heart rate and Blood Pressure Variability to deep breathing
  • Valsalva Response
  • Tilt table testing for Orthostatic Hypotension
  • Isometric Hand grip testing
  • Cold Pressor test
  • Thermoregulatory Sweat Test
  • QSART ( Quantitative Sudomotor Axon Reflex Test)

The symptoms of dysfunction of Autonomic Nervous System include Palpitations, Tachycardia, Bradycardia, Excessive or absent sweating, Sleep disturbances, Postural Dizziness, Syncope, Gastrointestinal motility disorders like Diarrhoea, Bladder and Bowel disturbances and Sexual disturbances, and disorders of body Temperature regulation.

Autonomic Nervous System is affected in Various Neurological Conditions like Parkinsons Disease, Multiple System Atrophy, Pure Autonomic Failure, Guillain Bare Syndrome and in various Peripheral Neuropathies and in General Medical Conditions Like Diabetes Mellitus, Various Endocrine disorders, and some drugs. Elderly individuals have dysfunction of the Autonomic Nervous system due to various reasons.

The recognition and evaluation of the symptoms of Autonomic Dysfunction is important especially in elderly individuals and in patients with Diabetes. The Autonomic Nervous System Lab is useful for the identification and evaluation and early management of Autonomic Dysfunction in these disorders thereby improving the outcome and quality of life in affected patients.

1. The state-of-the-art Linear Accelerator machine (LINAC) with the latest facilities is available in the Department of Radiation Oncology at our esteemed institution.

2. Through LINAC, we provide conformal radiation treatment modalities like:

  • a) 3DCRT – Three-Dimensional Conformal Radiation Therapy
  • b) IMRT – Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy
  • c) IGRT – Image Guided Radiation Therapy

3. We also treat patients using advanced techniques such as:

  • a) SRS – Stereotactic Radiosurgery
  • b) SRT – Stereotactic Radiation Therapy
  • c) SBRT – Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy

These are executed with minimal toxicity to normal structures and high efficacy against tumors.

4. Poor and needy cancer patients are benefitted by access to these advanced treatments.

  • The Poison Control Treatment & Research center (PCTRC) was established in the year 2007 under the leadership of Former Director of Medicine Prof. C. Rajendiran
  • PCTRC functions as a specialized unit that advises on, and assists with the prevention, diagnosis and management of poisoning as well as Snake Bite Envenomation and other Poisonous Bites & Stings 24 x 7 throughout the year.
  • The center is recognized by WHO for management of Poisoning bites and is listed in the WORLD DIRECTORY OF POISON CENTRES
  • PCTRC is 23 bedded facility equipped with centralized Oxygen support, Mechanical Ventilators, Plasmapheresis, Hemodialysis Machines, Toxicology laboratory and is supported by well-trained team of Physicians, Staff nurses, Bio-Chemists, Lab Technicians and Emergency Care Technicians
  • On an Average, annually 2000 to 2500 cases are being treated in the facility
  • The facility is also involved in the Training of Medical and Paramedical Staff in the Management of Emergencies, Poisoning and Poisonous Bites & Stings and has trained more than 10000 Doctors & Para Medicals from Primary and Secondary Health Care centers

Our Madras medical college & Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital is the first hospital in India to start chest pain clinic to provide zero delay care to triage and treat patients presenting with chest pain.

It was inaugurated by our Hon'ble Health Minister Mr.Ma.Subramaniyam , The Health secretary and The Dean on 10th March 2022 in Tower block II ground floor near ED place (TAEI). The clinic operates 24 hours/ 7 days and is staffed by a cardiology resident and a staff nurse. Consultant opinion is available if required.

All patients will have a consultation, clinical examination, resting 12-lead electrocardiogram, echocardiography and blood drawn for markers of acute myocardial necrosis (CK and CKMB activity, Myoglobin, and cTnT).

Facilities available:
  • Chest pain clinic – Cardiology resident and a staff nurse

Battery car with oxygen support (Transport of high risk patients to Coronary Care Unit in Cardiology department)

A total of 6237 patients were attended the chest pain clinic from the initiation to the completion of one year i.e., from 10th March 2022 to 30th March 2023. A total of 6237 patients (4163 males and 2074 females were clinically evaluated. Patients most likely to be referred to the clinic were people with chest pain both cardiac as well non cardiac were diagnosed. One goal of the clinic was to decrease the time delay of patients with emergency need.

Goals:

The provision of a chest pain clinic reduce the hospitalization of patients with benign non cardiac chest pain whilst facilitating the identification of those patients with acute coronary syndrome requiring in patient care. A specialist cardiology opinion combined with the resources of chest pain service would appear to have a higher diagnostic yield for ischemic heart disease.

The provision of chest pain clinic service not only provides a firm diagnosis of cardiac and non cardiac chest pain with less equivocation, but also more readily identifies those patients with ischemic cardiac pain.

Organ donation is a noble act. In recognition of the supreme sacrifice, the deceased organ donor is accorded honour walk. After organ retrieval, the mortal remains of the donor will be moved in a procession with a huge gathering of hospital staff, faculty and students paying homage , standing in two rows for a long stretch.

Madras medical college and Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital is one of the oldest premier educational institutions in India and Asia.

It was foundedin 1835 and the campus has many lustrous greenery which stands testimony to its old heritage. In the top of the list is the Baobab tree which is one of the oldest tress to be planted in the campus. It is a deciduous succulent tree which has its origin from the African continent. Its speciality is to conserve water in its huge bark and bear fruit in dry season. It can reach upto 100 feet long with all parts of the tree having medicinal uses such as an antipyretic,antiparasitic,refreshment for diarrhoea and dysentery and also to treat gingivitis.

Next in the scenery is the big Banyan tree which is a symbol of fertilitity,life and resurrection.

It spreads its roots downwards to grow in nearby places . the banyan has many ayurvedic uses such as a tonic,atringent and application over ulcers.

The shade provided by these trees is also accentuated by the spiritual aura of the peepal trees which hasthe famous association with the enlightenment of Buddha.The landscape is overcome only by the fresh air and the much needed shade provided by these flora of nature.

1. Point of Care Lab:

24x7 available facility in 201 Greenzone headed by the senior-most biochemist and 4 lab technicians.

Available tests:

  • CBC
  • RFT with Electrolytes
  • ABG
  • Viral Markers

These tests are performed for polytrauma patients and patients taken to EOT. This lab also supports various ICUs and EOT. On average, 200-250 samples are processed daily. Funds are generated through NK 48 Insurance.

A pneumatic shoot facility is also available to send vital blood investigations to the main central laboratory.

2. Trauma Registry:

Started in 2021 with support from the World Bank, TNHSP, and NHM, the online Trauma Registry allows patient tracking from pickup point to discharge across hospitals in Tamil Nadu. It includes pre-arrival intimation features.

3. Code Blue Crash Carts:

30 multipara monitors and defibrillators were sponsored through the Global Grant by Rotary International to enhance emergency care readiness.

4. Point of Care USG Machine:

This ultrasound machine is available in the Emergency Department and used for procedures such as:

  • Central line catheterization
  • Arterial line insertion
  • POCUS & EFAST
  • On-arrival nerve blocks
  • Abscess drainage
  • Thoracocentesis

5. Bedside X-Ray:

Mobile X-ray facilities are available for critically ill patients, enabling quick diagnosis and treatment without shifting the patient.

6. Skill Lab:

Inaugurated in January 2018 to promote continuing medical education and training in life-saving skills such as:

  • BLS, ACLS, PALS
  • Endotracheal intubation
  • Surgical cricothyroidotomy
  • Pericardiocentesis
  • Central venous line catheterization
  • IV access
  • POCUS

Regular sessions are conducted for postgraduates and staff nurses.

7. Deceased Donor Maintenance Unit:

A dedicated two-bedded unit in the Green Zone for maintaining brainstem dysfunction (BSD) patients. After two apnea tests, families are counseled about the possibility of organ donation.

MMC’s ED and Dept. of Anaesthesia have completed 35 organ retrievals, with donors ranging from 18 months to 80 years. Honor walks and tributes are given with dignity before the final handover to families.
