MMC Seminar Hall

The Madras Medical school was established in 1835 and later in 1850 became Madras Medical College. The historic seminar hall complex was built during this time. At that time, the complex housed the Dean’s office, administrative block, common hall for several departments.

The seminar hall was renovated in the year 1965. It occupies pride of honour in the MMC buildings for holding conferences in which eminent speakers across the country and world participate. Scientific and ethical committees are regularly conducted in this hall. It is also the place where monthly clinical society meetings are conducted which brings out the newer talents of young doctors.

  • The Poison Control Treatment & Research center (PCTRC) was established in the year 2007 under the leadership of Former Director of Medicine Prof. C. Rajendiran
  • PCTRC functions as a specialized unit that advises on, and assists with the prevention, diagnosis and management of poisoning as well as Snake Bite Envenomation and other Poisonous Bites & Stings 24 x 7 throughout the year
  • The center is recognized by WHO for management of Poisoning bites and is listed in the WORLD DIRECTORY OF POISON CENTRES
  • PCTRC is 23 bedded facility equipped with centralized Oxygen support, Mechanical Ventilators, Plasmapheresis, Hemodialysis Machines, Toxicology laboratory and is supported by well-trained team of Physicians, Staff nurses, Bio-Chemists, Lab Technicians and Emergency Care Technicians
  • On an Average, annually 2000 to 2500 cases are being treated in the facility
  • The facility is also involved in the Training of Medical and Paramedical Staff in the Management of Emergencies, Poisoning and Poisonous Bites & Stings and has trained more than 10000 Doctors & Para Medicals from Primary and Secondary Health Care centers

The State-of-the-art In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) facility was inaugurated at the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology (IOG) in Egmore on 7.6.2024. This is the first time the IVF facility has been set up at a government hospital in South India at a cost of Rs 6.8 crores. The facility has a dedicated lab for embryology, ICSI machine, high end USG machine and an operation theatre including endoscopic and hysteroscopy for infertility related procedures.

  • The Government Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine (GIRM) in K.K. Nagar, Chennai, is one of India's oldest and key rehabilitation centers. Founded in the late 1950s as part of the Government General Hospital, it began as a physiotherapy unit and later expanded to include medical rehabilitation and an artificial limb center. In 1979, GIRM moved to its current location. On 28th January 2023, it was upgraded to a Centre of Excellence for Rehabilitation, a 60 bedded hospital, inaugurated by the hon. Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, marking a new era in advanced rehabilitation services in India.
  • Specialty programs at GIRM cover musculoskeletal and pain rehabilitation, neurorehabilitation (spinal cord injury/stroke/TBI), amputee rehabilitation with prosthetic training, pediatric and geriatric rehabilitation, and interventional pain management using ultrasound and C-arm fluoroscopic guidance.
  • GIRM is equipped with advanced rehabilitation technologies such as immersive and non-immersive virtual reality rehabilitation therapies, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), body weight supported treadmill training (BWSTT), robotic hand glove for upper limb retraining, ArmeoSpring for robotic-assisted arm rehabilitation, and isokinetic equipment for sports rehabilitation.
