Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital: A Legacy of Healthcare and Education

  • History dates back to 1664, when the Government General Hospital in Chennai was established as one of the oldest institutions in Asia. Originally, it was set up within Fort St. George to provide medical care for British soldiers, the hospital gradually expanded in scope and significance. Governor Sir Elihu Yale played a crucial role in its early development by securing new premises within the fort in 1690. As the city of Madras grew, the hospital was relocated to Poonamallee High Road during the 18th and 19th centuries to accommodate the increasing demand for healthcare services. In 1835, the founding of the Madras Medical College marked a turning point, as the hospital became its primary teaching facility, further cementing its role in medical education.

  • In recognition of its remarkable legacy, Madras Medical College was honored with a commemorative postage stamp issued by the Indian Postal Service on March 6, 1985. The stamp, which features the college’s iconic main building, was released to mark the institution’s 150th anniversary. This tribute highlights the college’s enduring contributions to medical education and healthcare in India over the decades.

  • In recognition of its long-standing service and evolution, the hospital was renamed Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in 2011. Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) is a large, multi-specialty institution offering a comprehensive range of medical services across various departments. It plays a crucial role in advancing medical education and research, serving as a key teaching hospital for aspiring healthcare professionals. The hospital is especially renowned for its specialized departments in cardiology, nephrology, urology, neurology, neurosurgery, oncology, cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgeries, trauma care, rheumatology, plastic surgery, integrated intensive care units, etc. It also offers expertise in toxicology, advanced surgical procedures, cutting-edge radiological investigations, and a wide range of modern treatment facilities.

Madras Medical College & Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital

Madras Medical College, being one of the oldest medical colleges, has a rich history and heritage. Several legedaries and luminaries have studied and served in this institution. The current administration under the Dean is quite determined not just to sustain, but, to enhance the glory of this institution.

We are envisioning to achieve greater strides in all the three domains -- medical education, patient care and research.

Education is not just imparting knowledge, but, facilitating young graduates blossoming into wholesome professionals. Keeping this in consideration, several initiatives have been planned. Guidelines issued by the National Medical Council are diligently implemented. In addition, certain unique programmes are envisaged.

Academics
  • Twice monthly Clinical Society Meeting is conducted with participation of faculty and students of all the departments. This meeting provides opportunity to come across developments in other departments.
  • Endowment lectures / orations are conducted annually by most of the departments. Students get ample opportunities to listen to and interact with the award winning national & international experts.
  • Prize examinations are conducted in almost all the departments. Madras Medical College is the institution offering maximum number of prize examinations in the entire state.
  • Students are encouraged and motivated to participate in regional & national level competitive academic events. They are guided to organise state level annual academic conclave also (GENESIS).
  • Frequent interaction with faculty of clinical departments for enhancing knowledge on clinical application.
  • Organising exhibition of 3D models of anatomic structures.
  • Organising cadaver lab for enhancing surgical skills.
Anatomy
Patient Care
  • Comprehensive state -of -art care for the underprivileged patients is the goal.
  • Emergency care and Critical care have been strengthened.
  • In addition to the previously existing Intensive Medical Care Unit, Toxicology Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit & Post-operative Intensive Care unit, 22 ICUs have been established in different departments, including a new exclusive Critical Care Unit.
  • Special clinics --- Transgender clinic, Metabolic disease screening clinic (under Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam programme), Lupus Nephritis clinic , Epilepsy clinic, etc., have recently initiated.
  • Hospital acquired infection control measures have been strengthened . Recent initiative is -- use of a particular colour bed linen on every day to ensure change of linen everyday.
  • Patient and attendants’ amenities have been improved – modernised kitchen to provide food for patients, provision of dining facilities in every floor, mobile charging points, etc.
  • More focus on Deceased Donor Organ Transplantation programme. MMC is the centre which has done maximum deceased organ donations in the entire state.
Research

Recent measures initiated to enhance research include

  • Promotion of undergraduates to carry out research through ICMR grants.
  • Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit- an ICMR unit is functioning well. Several research proposals have received ICMR grants.
  • Periodic workshops are conducted on Research methodology, Good clinical practice , Biostatistics & Scientific manuscript writing.
Future Goals

The goal is to achieve further stride in all aspects.

  • Further collaboration with the best universities/institutions across the globe in academics and research.
  • Expansion of research activities – focusing on inter-departmental and integrated research.
  • Promotion of epidemiological research.
  • Encouraging out-reach activities with community participation.
  • Implementation of ‘eco-friendly’ measures in the hospital campus – solar power utilisation, minimisation of use of power, innovative bio-medical disposal systems, making the campus more green with plantation of more trees, etc.
  • Focusing on the potential role of Artificial Intelligence.
  • Establishment of state-of-the art Genetics and Molecular Biology laboratories.
  • Ethics and Communication skill development programmes for students.
  • Organising language skill sessions for students.

In short, we envision to make this institution a ‘role model’ for other institutions in all arenas

Placement Cell

  • The College of Pharmacy, Madras Medical College placement cell is continuously involved in project work allotment, industrial/hospital training and student placement. We offer a reputable forum that serves as a bridge between drug manufacturing industries and students.
  • By inviting various pharmaceutical companies, IT Healthcare professional organizations for campus recruitment of student who are in final year of B. Pharm / M. Pharm program.

Objectives and activities

  • The placement cell significantly contributes to a smooth and efficient placement process by coordinating all the activities to guarantee complete satisfaction of the graduating students for their better placement and career advancement.
  • To provide industrial training to improve their academic knowledge and professional experience.
  • To organize on/off campus recruitment to support students decide their employment opportunities in various Organizations and Industries.
  • Organizing Industrial visits to enhance students' technical understanding.
  • Extended Invitation to potential recruiters for the placement cell.
  • Encourage and assist our students to join as JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) in Government sectors like Captain Srinivasa Murthy Central Ayurveda Research Institute, Chennai and IIT, Chennai.
  • To arrange internship for M. Pharm students in Drug Testing Laboratory, Directorate of Medical Sciences, Tenyampet, Chennai to hone their technical and analytical skill sets.
  • To arrange hospital training at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai for B. Pharm. and M. Pharm. students, which will help them in advance understanding of patient counselling and drug store management.

RECREATION CENTER

  • The institution offers amenities like Cricket court, Hockey court, Volley ball court, Shuttle badminton court for the students. Every year sports competition are conducted for encouraging the students in such activities
